The abstract experience of landscape
Places have a huge impact on the way we feel. They can
be small and claustrophobic or open and expansive. Our relationship to those
places is not purely visual but derived from all our senses processing the
stimuli of our environment and sending signals to our brain.
Our experience of the same location may differ greatly depending upon our
mental and emotional state and if we are alone or part of a group. The historical
and social context associated with a particular place, our own cultural
background and beliefs can also influence our feelings about place.
My artistic process begins by stepping foot in the landscape, whether it be rural
or urban. It is vital that I sense how immersion within an environment makes me
feel and then communicate this through the medium of drawing and painting. It
is this relationship between ourselves and our external environment which
interests me and which forms the subject of my work.
I find the process of drawing and painting outdoors (en plein air) to be hugely
exciting and invigorating. There is an energy within the quality of the line,
the ability to communicate directly and meaningfully that cannot be achieved in
the studio. My interaction with the landscape becomes the stimulus from which
an interesting, lively and varied perceptive experience comes from.
The sculptural
qualities of oil paint are incredibly alluring and I am captivated by the
emotive and visceral charge this three dimensionality can evoke when coupled
with the interplay of colour and form.
